kool & the gang summer madness 1974 jazz funk fusion
Once in a while, I like to change it up a little and get a slow jam out there. This one is classic Kool & The Gang. The shimmering opening notes sure evoked that phenomenon when you look down a long road on a hot sunny day you can see the heat rising and distorting the road in front of it. And the low to high synthesizer tones mesmerized me. Originally recorded for their 1974 LP, "Light Of Worlds" ,"Summer Madness" is a classic jazz funk jinstrumental that contrasted with their brand of funk. Jazz in the right hands can be a wonderful thing. I heard it "Rocky" then, again in 1979 on late night radio in Quebec City . I didn't know who or what it was until I picked up Volume 3 of Mastercuts Jazz Funk library 1995. I knew three of the songs, and found this one stuck in between. Its a real favorite of mine. The production is sleek, mysterious and polished. A good one to sip a margarita to on a hot night looking over the city lights. If you want a great live version, have a listen to their Love & Understanding" LP of 1976
